“One Small Step” Forty-One Years Ago
It’s extremely hard to believe that the first step onto the surface of the moon was made forty-one years ago this month in July of 1969! I remember where I was at that exact moment – it was the TV room of our family home in South Bend, IN. I had been avidly following the space program ever since the first Mercury flight in grade school. The Apollo 11 flight took place during my high school years. In the previous month of June 1969, our family took a trip to Florida. One of our stops was at the Kennedy Space Center where we saw Apollo 11 sitting on the launch pad ready to go the next month.
My fascination has continued to this day through the space shuttle program. Hard to believe also that there are only a few flights left before the three ships in the shuttle fleet will be retired. The Constellation project was set to pick up from there, but that has been slashed and diminished by the current administration. I would have thought that a “bloated government” mentality would love to throw more money into NASA.
I trust that America will continue to press forward with space exploration. That is one of the things that has kept the US ahead of everyone else in the world. We need to continue to do great things for us to continue to be a great nation.
